Produced only in exceptional years with selected grapes from Quinta do Bom Retiro, Quinta da Urtiga and Quinta da Ervamoira, this oak, chestnut and mahogany cask aged Port was always going to be something special.; Intense, dark, brooding and alluring aromas of black plum, cassis, anise, tobacco and lavender spring forth from the bottle. Replicated in the nose, the flavours abound with smooth, silky and luscious texture alongside hints of cocoa, cherry and pipe tobacco. The fine tannins give structure and balance and lead to a long and aromatic finish. This Vintage Port 1997 is best decanted to enjoy its clear, bright and rich hue and would be ideal to serve after a meal with strong cheeses and dried fruits. Secondly, they were founded back in 1880 and played a leading role in defining the best grape varieties for the whole Douro Valley. And thirdly, compared to other Port houses they use a high proportion of grapes from their own vineyards ensuring immense quality in every bottle.
