The woman has fallen asleep with a glass in one hand and a pipe in the other. The two men seem to mock her state, and the picture may be intended to illustrate the saying 'De Wijn is een spotter' (Wine is a Mocker). This picture was probably painted in the early 1660s. Steen often painted pictures on the theme of female drunkenness, see for example 'The Effects of Intemperance'.
